My Film's Representation
Representation Within The Film
Who Is Represented?
As I have already discussed before in prior blog posts, I am the only person working on this film opener. This doesn't necessarily open the door for others to join in. My decision of working in a group by myself wasn't too exclude others or separate myself from the potential of collaborating on a project with my fellow classmates, this decision was decided upon on the sole basis of allowing myself to fully express my creativity through this opening sequence with an idea I already had formulating in my mind. I am a young African American girl in high school completing this project on my lonesome. While there is only one person in this film, I still believe that I am challenging representation in an aspect where I play the main character as a black female. Growing up there wasn't many black girls on T.V. that played the main character, we were always depicted as the side character or the best friend only there for support or "diversity". However, as the world progresses everyday, society gets to see a greater amount of representation in the media with people of color playing major roles in cinema. I feel as though my opening film is nearly done, my character is what I have envisioned in my mind when preparing to film. Along with race, I also tackle the discussion of drug abuse amongst teens and the need to appropriately address and try to diminish the abuse of drugs in our youth.
