My Film's Effects & Transitions
Additional Effects: Symbolism
While I was beginning to piece together all my collected clips from my several days of filming, I noticed that the flower scene was looking a little boring and dull. It isn't supposed to be full of action and have a lot of things going on but I also don't want to put my audience to sleep. So I wondered how I could possibly add something to amplify the significance of the opening sequence while still adhering to the storyline. Then I thought of reversing the clips, this way it tells a story of the character's process of how she got to the moment of her euphoric state or high off of drugs, represented by the flower scene. The reverse effect will end as soon as the second half of the sequence begins, introducing the drug store scene where she actually collects her medications. This reverse effect along with the use of slow motion in the first half of the sequence added the missing piece the clips needed to fully bring it alive. The reverse tells a story of a false reality. Since the character is actually throwing flowers onto the ground, they now appear to float back into her hands. The second shot is of an overhead shot of flowers on a white blanket and then we see the main character lying still on the white blanket. I like to think of this as symbolism to represent how the character is basically digging and decorating her grave because of her use of drugs.
Additional Transitions:
There are no show stopping or fancy transitions that I used. There is one however specific one that adds a nice touch to the overall feel of the opening. The flower scene cuts straight to a black screen, no fade, and then I use a J cut by playing a honking car sound from next shot coming up which is taken at night in front of the drug store.
